Definition: Pyrite is a mineral species composed of iron disulfide, polymorph of marcasite; it generally contains traces of precious metals.

Legend: Pyrite is also known as "fool's gold". According to legend, when Pyrite deposits were discovered, some miners went mad when they saw these large crystals, assuming they were gold. They lost their heads, thinking they'd become very rich, whereas Pyrite was much less valuable than gold.
